Kahana and Honokowai

Kahana & Honokowai Today:

These neighboring areas are about eight miles north of Lahaina, on the lower Honoapiilani Road, just a mile below the tiny West Maui airport, and far enough north to be considered quiet locations. Kahana has some high-rise condos located on a wide beach. Honokowai is a mix of old and new accommodations, slightly more expensive than Kahana, with a narrow beach and shallow water in some places, and no beach at all in others, making it unsuitable for swimming or snorkeling. Honokowai Park, Kahana Gateway shopping center, and several excellent restaurants are nearby.

Kahana & Honokowai the Past:

In ancient times, many villages that dotted the bays and beaches from Kaanapali to Kapalua, where for centuries Hawaiians lived, fished and grew taro. In 1854 the Lahaina missionaries built a stone church, with a shingle roof at Kahana, one of their four outstations. Dr. Baldwin made house calls to sick Hawaiians in this area, riding his horse, rain or shine, in the mid 1800’s.
