The name Wailuku in the Hawaiian Language means 'Bloody Waters', referring to a ferocious battle fought by Kamehameha I against Maui's warriors in Iao Valley. it is said that the river ran red for miles with the blood of the dead.

This is a quaint town built on the lower hills of the west Maui mountains. there are some interesting shops on Market street just off Main street, Restaurants, Art Galleries, and a Community Theater as well as a Cultural Center.
