Haleakala National Park (808) 572-9306
Haleakala National Park features a wilderness of great diversity, recognized as an International Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations. The dormant volcano offers majestic cinder cones and stark lava. Park habitats support communities of rare birds and plants unique to Hawaii. To the well prepared hiker and camper, Haleakala offers a memorable experience. See Horseback riding also. Hosmer Grove, at the 7,000 ft level a short drive from the rangers office: An experimental forest left over from last century. Trails wind through stands of Cedars, Pines, Juniper and Sugi. With some bird lookouts describing Hawaii's native birds. A shelter is provided for inclement weather, tent sites, cooking site, pit toilets, water, picnic tables. There is no charge but permits are necessary. Park headquarters (808) 572-9306. Pools of Ohe`o, Kipahulu District, near Hana, Tent camping, toilets, picnic tables, BBQ grills. Both available as first come first serve. Inside Haleakala crater are two primitive tent camp-sites one at Paliku cabin the other at Holua cabin.There are three cabins inside the crater, they must be reserved well in advance, as these are very popular with Residents as well as Visitors. Paliku, Holua and Kapalaoa Cabins: Fully self contained. With stoves, water and pit toilets. They can handle up to 12 campers each. bunks are provided. There is a small fee for cabin rental. Weather 871-5054. All sites are three nights maximum stay. When in Haleakala National Park please keep to the trails, this is enforced. Polipoli Springs State Park (808) 984-8109
This is at the 6,200ft elevation on Halaeakala's west slope, and usually requires four wheel drive to reach. Hawaii's Redwood forest also conifers, Cyprus, Ash, Cedar and Pines. A large grove of Methley plums ripen in early June. Toilets, picnic tables, BBQ's. There is one cabin which sleeps 10. water, cold shower, kitchenware...sheets and towels available as you pick up up the key. Waianapanapa State Park (808) 984-8109
Located near Hana, 120acres,tent camping, 12 cabins, Restrooms, picnic tables showers. This is a great park. Explore the caves and Black sand beach. Hiking trails abound. Permits are required from the Division of State Parks, 54 South High Street, Wailuku, HI 96793. or call (808) 984-8109. Photos
